State Legislative Housing Committee Staff To Tour Affordable Housing Sites in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, CA…Long Beach Affordable Housing Coalition, LBAHC, announces that affordable housing sites in Long Beach will be toured by Capitol staff of both the Senate and Assembly Housing Committees, the State Treasurer’s Office, and the California Debt Limit Allocating Committee, CDLAC. The Southern California Association of Non-Profit Housing, SCANPH, is sponsoring and coordinating the tour.

The tour will begin today in downtown Los Angeles. It will include stops at Las Posadas (transitional housing for teenage mothers with one child) and lunch with local affordable housing developers, including LBAHC, at the Mary Andrews Clark Residence (a Single Room Occupancy historic preservation conversion). The tour will conclude by visiting two projects in Long Beach.

The first is a LBAHC remodel and first-time homebuyer resale on the 6000 block of Gardenia Avenue. This is a five-bedroom home with over 1800 square feet. The second is a 25 unit, two and three bedroom LBAHC development at 1117 Elm Avenue by St Mary’s Hospital. It is an elevator serviced security building over subterranean parking, developed using Low-Income Tax Credits from CDLAC, the first of its kind in California.

“We are very happy to have this opportunity to showcase the work of Long Beach Affordable Housing and the good things happening in the City,” said Alan Burks, LBAHC President.

Long Beach Affordable Housing Coalition was founded in May of 1992 in the aftermath of the civil unrest the month before. The founding members initially mobilized to restore the lost and damaged housing. They discovered that the task was overwhelming for a loose-knit group of community activists - that problems of blight extended far beyond the riot damaged properties. The situation demanded long-term solutions.

LBAHC, a non-sectarian organization, was incorporated in July of 1993, achieving an IRS 501(c)(3) Charitable Non-Profit Status the following month. It had $6,120 cash and in-kind contributions from its first board members. Today, the Coalition is the steward of over $10 million in quality housing. The Cities of Bellflower, Downey, Long Beach and Paramount have selected LBAHC as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO), providing operating assistance and access to federal HOME funds for both single and multi-family projects.
